Course Overview
Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP)is organised by the Royal College of Surgeons(RCS) of England and will be held at the Leicester General Hospital. The course will runover two days and is designed to advance the practical, theoretical and personal skills necessary for the care of critically ill surgical patients. It is aimed at surgeons and those who deal with surgical patients who are in specialist training.

Overview
CCrISP is an interactive course that combines a variety of teaching and learning techniques including simulated patient scenarios, case-based skill stations and demonstrations. You will be encouraged to share knowledge and experience with your peers throughout the course.
Aims
You will gain:
- A thorough comprehension of the CCrISP algorithm, a proven tool for assessing and stabilising unwell patients.
- Enhanced decision-making skills to ensure timely interventions that can prevent complications and improve patient outcomes.
- Practical experience in applying multidisciplinary techniques for the care of critically ill patients, ensuring collaborative and effective team-based care.
Suitability
This course is ideally suited for:
- CT1-2 and SAS grades.
- Senior trainees are also welcome to attend a CCrISP course if they have not done so before.
- SCPs may attend the CCrISP course to meet the syllabus requirements for Clinical Method in Surgical Practice, Perioperative Care, Critical Care, Core Clinical Capabilities & Professional Skills.
Prerequisites
- Delegates must be CT level and above and ideally in a training post.
Pre Course Work
- Read the handbook (this will be sent by post at least 4 weeks prior to the course) and complete the online learning
- Complete the online MCQs
Assessment
The pre-course work includes MCQs, for which participants should achieve 80%. During the face-to-face days, after a morning of introductory activities, the course is fully assessed. Small group skills stations are assessed throughout the afternoon of day 1 and the morning of day 2. In the afternoon of day 2, participants undertake a simulated patient assessment (‘moulage’). At the end of the course, participants are given a pass/fail grade. If a participant fails or misses individual elements, they can resit these at a later date. If the participant performs poorly overall, they fail the course completely and must retake the entire course.

Schedule: You will participate in a variety of practical training sessions during the CCrISP course, including:
- master a systematic approach to assessing critically ill patients;
- improve detection of subtle and varied signs of critical illness;
- understand the importance of preventing complications;
- recognise the surgeon’s role in multidisciplinary care;
- collaborate with nurses, surgeons, intensivists, and anaesthetists;
- provide essential information and support to patients and their families during surgical care.

Where can I park and what are the fees?
When attending a course you will need to park in the patient car park. The LGH site operates on a pay-and-display system, so upon arrival, you must purchase a ticket for the appropriate duration and display it in the front window of your vehicle. An ATM and coin machine are available at the main reception.

How many days is the course & what are the timings?
The CCrISP course duration is for 2 days. Day 1 timings are 08:00 – 17:30 and day 2 timings are 07:50 – 16:45.
Is there any pre course work to do?

How do I access my certificate?
Within two weeks of the course finishing, you will receive a link to the post-course online evaluation. You then have 30 days to complete the evaluation. Your certificate will be available to download from the RCS England website within 24 hours of completing the evaluation.
How many professional credits can I claim?
CCrISP is worth 12 CPD points and 4 PGCert Credits.
What is the dress code for the course?
There is no dress code, scrubs are not required. Please wear clothing that you will be comfortable in.
Do I need to register with the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS)?
