Training and Support for our Medical Students
Ward placements in UHL in Phase 2 provide the exciting opportunity to use the skills and information gained from prior learning in a clinical supervised hospital environment.
Benefits
Ward Apprenticeship training
Years 3 & 5 offer key apprenticeship training in Medicine and Surgery, culminating in shadowing of foundation doctors as part of the Foundation Assistantship Programme.
Specialty training in Year 4
Year 4 offers training across wider specialties in UHL to include Child Health, Reproductive Health, Paediatrics and Cancer Care.

Phase 2 learning incorporates the opportunity for students to select components of choice in areas of interest.

Training Programmes
Internal Medicine Training
IMT is the primary entry point and initial stage of training for those trainees following a career in medicine.
General Practice
3 year training programme normally consisting of 18 months in a GP and 18 months in hospital posts.
Core Surgical Training
24 month core programme rotating through sub-specialities working towards the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme.

Libraries
The service includes training, support and a Clinical Librarian service. 24 hour access to the libraries is available to all UHL staff.
Clinical Skills Unit
Provides high quality, innovative clinical skills and resuscitation training to UHL staff and medical students.
Conference Service
Provides in-house management and support for a wide range of medical courses and conferences.
Clinical Education Centres
The CEC team provide support for a number of educational functions and oversee the room booking process for the centres.

The UHL UG together with our team of Block Leads warmly welcome students into Phase 2. Block Inductions are held using a combination of virtual and Face to face teaching and our UG team will work with you to ensure you have the relevant information, offering an open door policy to help and assist at all times.
Each block is unique in its set up, timetabling and delivery but all follow a common theme in achieving aims and objectives in line with GMC guidelines. UHL Block Leads work closely with the Director of Medical Education UHL and Programme Directors at LMS to oversee and hone effective teaching delivery.
All third year students will receive a UHL user account including a UHL email address to enable access to specified read only programmes to aid and underpin the clinical experience.
All blocks in UHL in all year groups offer formative assessments – either written, clinical osce or both. This is excellent preparation for summative end of year assessments and helps students to evaluate their own learning.
UHL offers food outlets on all 3 sites including restaurants and coffee shops ; both UHL and UoL computers are available in libraries cross site and the hospital hopper offers free transport cross site. Maps are made available and Welcome information is sent out prior to every block.
