Training Programmes
Internal Medicine Training
IMT is the primary entry point and initial stage of training for those trainees following a career in medicine.
General Practice
3 year training programme normally consisting of 18 months in a GP and 18 months in hospital posts.
Core Surgical Training
24 month core programme rotating through sub-specialities working towards the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme.

The service includes training, support and a Clinical Librarian service. 24 hour access to the libraries is available to all UHL staff.
Clinical Skills Unit
Provides high quality, innovative clinical skills and resuscitation training to UHL staff and medical students.
Conference Service
Provides in-house management and support for a wide range of medical courses and conferences.
Clinical Education Centres
The CEC team provide support for a number of educational functions and oversee the room booking process for the centres.
Frequently Asked Questions
Training to be a qualified FY1 doctor is between 5-6 years depending on whether a BSc is undertaken. Students undertake 2 years based at the new George Davies Centre for Medicine and then a further 3 years in hospital based placements in UHL or one of the District hospital partners in line with the UG curriculum.
UHL offer small group teaching in Year 2 for History taking and Examination across the main body systems. This is taught by UHL clinicians on the wards which culminates in a clinical OSCE assessment which is excellent preparation for Phase 2.
Yes clinical skills training for UG medical students is delivered by the UHL Clinical Skills Team based at the LRI. Through a combination of e-learning and face to face assessment skills are delivered throughout student training commencing in Year 1.
UHL liaise closely with Leicester Medical School’s Pastoral Support Unit to support students and their well-being which is of paramount importance. UHL tutors provide mentoring and support lead by our UHL Block leads across all year groups.
Yes all Year 1 students will undertake an HCA Care Certificate course working closely with UHL nursing and medical staff. Not only will you gain a comprehensive skill set throughout the course by participating in tutorials, learning clinical skills and attending a shadowing placement but this qualification will equip you with the skills to join the UHL HCA nursing bank if you wish.
