Overview
The Royal College of Surgeons Basic Surgical Skills (BSS) Course is a foundational programme designed for trainees and aspiring surgeons to develop essential surgical skills in a controlled and supportive environment. Accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons, this two-day hands-on course provides a structured introduction to the core techniques, safety principles, and confidence-building exercises needed to excel in the early stages of a surgical career. Participants will gain the knowledge and skills to perform fundamental surgical tasks with proficiency, making it an ideal start to a robust surgical education.
Aims
The BSS Course aims to:
- Introduce essential surgical techniques and instrument handling skills.
- Build participants’ confidence in performing basic surgical tasks.
- Establish a strong foundation in surgical safety and tissue handling.
- Develop a pathway for continuous skill enhancement and professional growth.
Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will:

- Develop proficiency in handling surgical instruments effectively.
- Learn core skills for suturing, knot-tying, tissue handling and anastomosis.

Prerequisites
Participants should have:
- A medical qualification or be a member of the extended surgical team.
- A basic understanding of surgical procedures and anatomy.
- An eagerness to pursue surgical training or a career in surgery.
Duration and Schedule
Duration: 2 days
Schedule: Each day includes a mix of short lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on practical sessions, all led by experienced surgical instructors. Day one focuses on basic skills, such as suturing, handling instruments, and tissue management, and ends with performing a small bowel anastomosis. Day two progresses to more complex techniques, including vascular anastomosis, tendon repair and laparoscopic skills. Full schedules are provided upon registration.
Assessment and Evaluation
The course includes continuous assessment through observation and feedback from instructors. At the end of the course, participants will undergo a practical assessment to evaluate their understanding and competence in the skills covered. Successful completion of the course is marked by a certificate awarded by the Royal College of Surgeons, providing a recognized accreditation in basic surgical skills.

FAQ
Where can I park and what are the fees?
When attending a course you will need to park in the patient car park. The LGH site operates on a pay-and-display system, so upon arrival, you must purchase a ticket for the appropriate duration and display it in the front window of your vehicle. An ATM and coin machine are available at the main reception.

How many days is the course & what are the timings?
The BSS course is for 2 full days with both days timings from 8.30am until 5.30pm.
Is there any pre course work to do?
Yes – watch the course videos on the RCS website, including the electrosurgery video, read the participant handbook that the course provider will send you and complete the Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) using the information within the videos and in the handbook. Electrosurgery is not covered on the face-to-face days and therefore it is essential that you watch the video and answer the MCQs in order to achieve the learning outcome related to electrosurgery.
Is there an assessment on the course?
Yes – you must score at least 80% (16 marks out of 20) on the pre course MCQs. You must also: attend both face-to-face days, demonstrate safe working and show improvement in technical skills throughout the course and
complete the post-course online evaluation within 30 days of receiving the link.
BSS is an assessed course and full attendance is compulsory. If you arrive after the start of the Handling Instruments session, you may be turned away, and may not be eligible for a refund. If you realise you are going to be late, you must contact your centre immediately.
How do I access my certificate?
Within two weeks of the course finishing, you will receive a link to the post-course online evaluation. You then have 30 days to complete the evaluation. Your certificate will be available to download from the RCS England website within 24 hours of completing the evaluation.
How many professional credits can I claim?
BSS is worth 12 CPD points & BSS also counts as 2 PGCert credits for those enrolled on this programme.
What is the dress code for the course?
There is no dress code, scrubs are not required. Please wear clothing that you will be comfortable in.
Do I need to register with the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS)?
Yes you will need to register with the RCS as the course is ran by the them. Should you have any queries the RCS contact details are education@rcseng.ac.uk.
